Gelato is the Italian word for ice cream. We say it is the World’s Original Ice Cream®. Gelato was created around 1533 by the court chefs of Catherine de Medici in Florence, Italy. These court chefs were the first to add just a “touch” of milk to fresh fruit and wine water ices (sorbetto) creating gelato.
“Gelati” is the plural of gelato, meaning many flavors.
While gelato is the Italian word for ice cream, there are many differences between the two. A key difference is gelato is lower in fat than ice cream. Traditional gelato is made from milk instead of cream. Also, traditional gelato is made without eggs. Many ice cream recipes contain eggs. Gelato has less air and is denser than ice cream making each scoop smooth and creamy, rich and vibrantly flavored.
